NAPAWF is the only organization focused on building power with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) women and girls to influence critical decisions that affect our lives, our families and our communities. Using a reproductive justice framework, we elevate AAPI women and girls to impact policy and drive systemic change in the United States.

NAPAWF was founded in 1996 to realize the vision of 100 AAPI women who recognized the need for an organization that would amplify AAPI women's stories and experiences. Being seen and heard in the public narrative gives us the power to shape the policy and cultural change needed to gain agency over our lives, families, and communities.

Today, we are mobilizing and building power in cities across the United States to create social, political, and economic change for AAPI women and girls. We also show up in solidarity for other women of color who are experiencing injustice and harms of oppression and marginalization.

Our work is focused in the following strategies:

  • Policy and Structural Change
  • Organizing and Civic Engagement
  • Legal Advocacy and Judicial Strategy

We use the Reproductive Justice lens to intersectionally address three core issues:

  • Reproductive Health and Rights
  • Economic Justice
  • Immigration and Racial Justice

POSITION OVERVIEW

As AAPIs continue to fight the "model minority" myth, the dearth of data on our communities, even in racial breakdowns of existing demographic data, renders our community invisible. This gap is further compounded by the lack of data disaggregated by ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation and gender identity, immigration status, and more. NAPAWF is seeking a Director of Research to 1) grow and oversee NAPAWF's research department through strategic development, 2) work with external research partners, 3) supervise other research staff, 4) support data needs in departments across the organization, and 5) fill the gaps in research and data on our community through primary as well as secondary data analyses in new, groundbreaking issue areas for NAPAWF to inform policy and structural change. The ideal candidate is someone who not only has demonstrable expertise in quantitative and qualitative data analyses as well as in developing research proposals for funding, but thinks intersectionally and through the lived experiences of impacted individuals for the ultimate purpose of building power. NAPAWF's organizational culture encourages effectiveness, connectedness, and learning: the Research Director will work closely with the entire program team, including the policy team, communications team, field team, and legal team.

POSITION DUTIES

To oversee NAPAWF's research department and produce research to help drive our policy work and recommendations, the Research Director will:

  • Provide strategic direction on how to meet the organization's research goals
  • Manage and oversee multi-year research grants to produce timely results
  • Explore topics to conduct novel research & analyses with input from NAPAWF's policy and field teams
  • Develop and pursue funding opportunities to help grow NAPAWF's research portfolio in line with the overall mission and vision of the organization
  • Build cross-sectoral partnerships between NAPAWF and other research organizations
  • Represent NAPAWF at external research convenings and serve as an expert on research and policy advisory groups both internal and external to the organization
  • Employ quantitative and qualitative research skills to produce original data to support policy work and help drive policy and structural change for our communities
  • Help produce new fact sheets, issue briefs, and reports using novel and intersectional approaches to data analyses
  • Oversee the cleaning and analysis of census data to supplement the aforementioned written materials as well as to support NAPAWF's policy and advocacy work
  • Track and synthesize information from external research, government reports and findings, and polling to advise on policy strategy and recommendations at the federal and state level
  • Coordinate research efforts with the policy team, field team, communications team, and the legal team
  • Translate complex research findings into language suitable for the purpose of communicating with our base, the media, and our partners, including how to visualize or convey complex data for multiple audiences
  • Advise communications and public education strategies to publicize our findings and increase NAPAWF's visibility
  • Provide written and verbal updates and reports for grant reporting purposes
  • Provide organizational leadership through coordinating with other executive team members from different departments mainly through regular executive team and managerial meetings

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated strong quantitative and qualitative research skills including at least five years of experience with data collection, cleaning, and analyses and proficiency in research methods and statistical programming (Stata preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing externally funded, multi-year research grants with a track record of meeting deadlines and producing rigorous results (ex.: through publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at academic conferences, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and overseeing all aspects of large-scale research studies and obtaining external funding.
  • Demonstrated experience in building research partnerships with other organizations and producing collaborative, intersectional findings.
  • Demonstrated experience working across different departments within an organization.
  • Demonstrated experience carrying out longer term research projects with external stakeholders from data collection & analyses to policy recommendations as well as nuanced understanding of how research can be used for movement, coalition, and power building with a racial equity focus.
  • Demonstrated experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • Nuanced and deep understanding of reproductive health and rights, immigrant and racial justice, and economic justice and labor issues, especially as they relate to the AAPI community, is highly desired.
  • Adaptability, creativity, and the ability to think outside the box in working with incomplete data and federal data sets to pull together and synthesize information for effective organizing, advocacy, policymaking, and communications.
  • Strong analytical and persuasive writing skills to connect research to advocacy and social justice are a must.
  • Ability to produce quality work in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and concurrent projects is a must.
  • Ability to work independently and being confident in one's ability to make good decisions, be proactive and take initiative is a must
  • Demonstrated effective planning and organizational skills, including managing up, down, and laterally, anticipating research needs and identifying opportunities to fill gaps in research for the organization and our movement.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary for this position is $89,000-95,000 annually, commensurate with experience. A highly competitive benefits package includes a 401k plan, medical, dental, and vision insurance. NAPAWF's medical plan is covered by NAPAWF at 100% for the employee and dependents with no out of pocket costs, including prescription drugs costs. Qualified dependents may also be covered. NAPAWF also offers full-time employees 15 days of vacation in the first year, sick leave, flexible spending program options and personal/family leave as well as paid vacation between December 25th and January 2nd of each year.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is based in an office setting but will remain remote during the COVID-19 pandemic as the organization determines. The person in this position should be able to engage in the diverse demands of the work, including the capacity to remain in a stationary position, operate a computer, and move about the office and outside of the office. They must have the capacity to work some evening hours and/or weekends as required. Occasional travel is required.
